Police representatives in Leicestershire have criticised a proposal that all new recruits should have university degrees.
Leicestershire Police Federation, which represents rank and file officers, said setting a new entry requirement would be a mistake and would prevent good candidates entering the service.
It was proposed by the College of Policing, the official body which advises on training and other police issues.
