A robber spat in a 65-year-old woman's face as he tried to snatch her handbag.
The man targeted the woman in the street in the Spinney Hills area of Leicester last week.
Police said the man approached the woman from behind and tugged at the bag, which was on her shoulder.
He spat in her face when she turned around and caught him with his hand on or in the bag.
He ran away empty-handed when the woman challenged him, police said.
